Balancing work and family life can feel like keeping a dozen plates spinning. Between work, family responsibilities and the things you want to do for yourself, it is easy to end up stretched thin. With some honest planning, good use of time and proper self care, it is possible to find a rhythm that works. Here are five places to start.
Decide what matters most
Start with your priorities. Is it time with the people you love, progress in your career, something of your own, or your health? Once you know, the smaller decisions get easier.
Draw clear lines
Boundaries stop burnout. Set working hours and keep to them, and when work is done, switch off properly rather than half checking messages all evening.
Use your time well
A calendar, a short daily list and a sensible order of tasks make a surprising difference. Do the things that matter first and let the rest wait.
Say what you need
Be open with your employer, colleagues and family about your commitments and your limits. Most problems come from people guessing.
Look after yourself
Exercise, sleep, decent food, a few minutes of mindfulness and whatever brings you joy are not treats. They are what make everything else possible. Looking after yourself is not selfish, it is the foundation.
For many of our franchisees, the biggest step towards balance was work that bends around family rather than the other way round.
